  • Comprising three solar plants, Cotoperí Solar will generate 286GWh of clean energy annually, enough to meet the demand of 166,000 households.

ACCIONA Energía announced today that the largest photovoltaic complex in Central America and the Caribbean, Cotoperí Solar (163MWp), has begun feeding renewable electricity into the grid of La Romana province, Dominican Republic.

Comprising three solar plants, Cotoperí Solar will generate 286GWh of clean energy annually, enough to meet the demand of 166,000 households, and will avoid the emission of more than 210,000 tons of CO2, equivalent to planting over 5.5 million trees.

The project has a significant positive impact on the local economy and employment, with the direct and indirect hiring of more than 600 people during its construction.

ACCIONA Energía is the majority shareholder of the project, with a 51% stake. The remaining 49% is held by Cotosolar Holding, which includes JMMB Fondo de Energía Sostenible (FES), managed by JMMB Funds, Grupo Pais and other minority investors.

Cotoperí Solar is the second PV project to be completed by ACCIONA Energía in the Dominican Republic, where it has already commissioned Calabaza I (58MWp) in 2023. Additionally, it is currently building the Pedro Corto solar plant (82.69MWp), also in partnership with Grupo Pais.

In May, ACCIONA Energía and the acciona.org Foundation signed collaboration agreements with the Ministry of Energy and Mines to promote access to affordable, safe, sustainable, and modern energy for vulnerable communities in the Dominican Republic.

In addition, acciona.org, together with the Dominican organization Centro Arcoíris, has launched a project to improve access to water and sanitation in the neighbourhoods of Bella Vista and Villa Penca, in the municipality of Bajos de Haina, that will benefit more than 4,500 people.

In the field of infrastructure, ACCIONA is currently building the eastern aqueduct of Santo Domingo, which will improve the water supply for 850,000 people, and the runway of the Cabo Rojo International Airport in Pedernales.
