  • The project is estimated at around 88 million euros

A joint venture made up of the Construction and Water divisions of ACCIONA and local partners ((Inversiones y Construcciones del Caribe y Consorcio Solsanit) has been awarded the contract to extend the Eastern Aqueduct of Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) to supply the population in Santo Domingo Este, one of the areas with the highest population density in the country’s capital. The contract is estimated at over 97 million US dollars (around 88 million euros).

The extension aims to cover the demand for water from the growing population of the area, and also to improve supplies to Santo Domingo Norte, increasingly the availability of water for safe human consumption.

The Eastern Aqueduct currently contains two modules producing a total of 4 m3/second, and the successful joint venture will create an additional module of 2m3/second. The water will be taken from the river Ozama and treated in the existing plant thanks to the extension to it planned in the project.

A 41-kilometer-long macro-distribution network will provide a service to the population and connect the existing storage facilities to another three that will be built. Once the project is completed, the Eastern Aqueduct will cover more than one million people, guaranteeing top water quality to end users.

ACCIONA Agua has been operational in the country since October 2009, when it was awarded its first contract for the construction and start-up of the potabilization plant at Peravia (86,400 m³/day), including construction work to supply water to an initial population of 138,000, extendable to more than 300,000 inhabitants. The project entered service in April 2016 with macro-distribution in the communities of the province of Peravia.
