ACCIONA Energía has completed two informational meetings with companies, professionals from the agroforestry sector, and other local stakeholders in the municipalities of Logrosán (Cáceres) and Zurbarán (Badajoz). The goal was to encourage local businesses to actively participate in the more than 300 jobs that will be generated by the biomass supply chain for the plant the company is building in Logrosán.
The meetings took place at the Casa de Cultura in Logrosán (March 27 at 7:00PM) and at the Casa de Cultura in Zurbarán (March 28 at 12:00PM). During the events, the company presented the business opportunities created by the biomass plant and its impact on the use of agricultural by-products. In addition, Agrovidar, Soluciones Agroambientales, presented the main findings of a study conducted by them on the availability of biomass in the area were shared, along with several business models focused on its collection, processing, and transport.
These sessions are part of a strategy aimed at developing a local collaboration network to ensure a sustainable biomass supply and to stimulate the regional economy.
The biomass plant in Logrosán, currently under construction, is expected to consume around 261,000 metric tons of agricultural and forestry biomass annually, representing a significant opportunity for economic activity in the surrounding area. The region has high productive potential, particularly from pruning residues of holm oak, olive, chestnut, and other fruit trees.
Beyond its economic impact, the use of biomass will contribute to more efficient land management and fire prevention by encouraging the clearing and maintenance of forests and pasturelands. It will also add value to agricultural by-products that would otherwise go unused, reducing emissions and risks associated with uncontrolled burning or abandonment.
THE LOGROSAN PLANT
ACCIONA Energía began construction of the Logrosán biomass plant in March 2023, after being awarded the contract for its construction, operation, and maintenance by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge in the third auction for the renewable energy economic regime.
Located 10 kilometers from THE municipality’s urban center, the plant will cover a total area of 200,000 square meters, with over half dedicated to storage. The commencement of production is expected in the second half of 2025 and will reach 376GWh/year, avoiding the emission of more than 165,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere per year.
