  • The projects will have a combined power capacity of 21.2MW and a total energy storage capacity of 41.7MWh

ACCIONA Energía announced today the construction of three battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the Dominican Republic, which are expected to be commissioned in the last quarter of 2027.

The projects will have a combined power capacity of 21.2MW and a total energy storage capacity of 41.7MWh. They will be located alongside the Pedro Corto, Calabaza and Cotoperí photovoltaic plants, enabling the use of existing infrastructure, reducing the need for additional land and optimizing investment costs.

The new batteries will improve the stability of the National Interconnected Electric System (SENI). Thanks to their nearly instantaneous response, they will help correct frequency deviations and facilitate the integration of more renewable energy.

This initiative reflects the evolution of the regulatory framework in the Dominican Republic, which prioritizes battery storage for grid stability and ancillary services, against a backdrop of increasingly competitive battery costs.

For ACCIONA Energía, these new projects also represent an opportunity to enhance the value of its existing assets in the Dominican Republic, where it already operates three photovoltaic facilities with a combined capacity of 303.3MWp: Calabaza I (58MWp), Cotoperí Solar (162.6MWp) and Pedro Corto (82.7MWp).

Both Cotoperí Solar and Pedro Corto were developed in partnership with local companies. In Cotoperí Solar, ACCIONA Energía holds a majority stake of 51%, while the remaining 49% is held by Cotosolar Holding, comprising the JMMB Sustainable Energy Fund (FES), managed by JMMB Funds, Grupo Pais and other minority investors. At Pedro Corto, ACCIONA Energía also holds a 51% stake, with Fondo de Desarrollo de Sociedades de Impacto Social Pioneer II owning the remaining 49%.
