The use of composite materials allowed the lighthouse to be built in about half the time of a steel equivalent, and with a 20% reduction in its carbon footprint.

ACCIONA has built the first lighthouse in the world made from composite materials for the Port of Valencia.

The structure, 32 meters tall, is being transported by road on a special vehicle to Valencia, where it will be installed on February 13th.

The composite materials developed by ACCIONA Infrastructure’s R&D center are resistant to corrosion, withstand exposure to seawater, and require less maintenance, making them ideally suited to a marine environment.  In addition, ACCIONA developed an innovative construction and assembly technique that allowed the lighthouse to be built in about half the time of a typical steel and cement structure, with a 20% reduction in its carbon footprint.

The new Valencia Lighthouse was designed by Ignacio Pascual, Infrastructure Director of the Valencia Port Authority. It will replace the city’s old lighthouse, which has become obsolete following the port’s recent extension. The new lighthouse will be fully operational within a month, becoming the first lighthouse in the world made from composite materials.
