This plant was designed and built to treat water from a reservoir to provide drinking water to the Barlavento Algarvio region of Portugal.

It has been treating surface water from the Odelouca reservoir since 2012, and groundwater from the Vale da Vila and Benaciate basins. Construction began in October 1998 and was completed at the end of 1999, being ACCIONA's first project in Portugal.

In 2021, an extension with two new flotation lines was carried out, each with a treatment capacity of 600 litres/second. With these improvements, the total treatment capacity of the plant is now 3 m3/second.

The construction work has led to an improvement in the facility, increasing the level of water supplies in the area and guaranteeing them for the entire region at times of water shortages. This increase in supply capacity will also provide a solution to the particular nature of the region’s raw water, and will strengthen the characteristics of the new treatment framework, supplying the entire perimeter of the Algarve.

It has one water train, one sludge train. Due to the extension in 2021, two new flotation lines have been added.
