Home-grown technology for building the breakwaters using the caisson construction method, a pioneering initiative in Latin America.

More than 3.8 kilometres of breakwater, 2.8 km of which will be made artificially using concrete blocks.

 

The terminal, which required 21,000 tonnes of steel and 350,000 m3 of concrete, was built using the technology of the Kugira, the world's largest floating caisson dock, owned by ACCIONA, which arrived in Brazil for the first time in 2011, exclusively for this project. The terminal is the first to be built with precast concrete caissons in Brazil. A total of 2,800 metres of protective dikes have been built, using Kugira's concrete caisson technology. A total of 42 floating caissons have been used.

The use of this technology to build the breakwater has led to a reduction of 8.5 million tonnes of stones in the rockfill. It has also avoided the emission of 100 tonnes of CO2.

ACCIONA's Engineering Business Line developed the engineering for the basic project and the construction project, as well as providing technical assistance during the execution of the works.
