Cogeneration is the process whereby electricity and useful thermal energy are obtained. Applied to industrial processes, it increases their energy efficiency because it uses part of the thermal energy to generate electricity that would otherwise be lost to the atmosphere.

In Spain cogeneration comes under the Special Regime of electric power production together with renewables, the aim of this regime being to promote generation that is renewable and efficient.

ACCIONA currently has two cogeneration plants (9 MW), all of them in Spain.
